about

"Intermix" (propositions for performance installation), is a collaborative performance project I developed as part of my online residency at LAB451.

For each Intermix, I recorded to video a new private performance where I resonate and record the sound of objects with my body. I then sent the resulting video to a collaborator who then responded aurally to what they saw and heard. Initially the project also contained audio recordings* of the performances to complement that of my collaborator's descriptions but halfway through development these were omitted, inviting listeners instead to imagine and visualize what has been performed solely from my collaborator's perspective.

Epilogue

I made these performances after discovering that plastics now exist within almost every body on Earth. Climate change leaves one feeling powerless to stop it. Our governments whom we have elected to act on our behalf seem reticent to do so. Driven by our ambiguous relationship with these materials we have created, many of which that cannot be recycled, how useful they are but how destructive their presence is in our environment once discarded; I wanted to engage with these materials and resonate them in an intimate and bodily way to feel closer to them but that would also confer the conflict I felt to the listener. By denying myself a voice and inviting others to speak and act on my behalf, there is I think both a confirmation and denial of what has and is happening, and which by analogy with the climate emergency, what we must see, hear, and now imagine will be.

*Following completion of the project, in late October 2022, these raw audio recordings were donated to Waste Kompost Radio to be recycled as part of a sound installation and broadcast in Venice.
